The often-cited “test” of still life photography is that
you can’t just take a picture—you have to make it.

Every image is personal and represents my childhood, my
family and my issues. The teeth belong to my father while
the bacon sandwich refers to my love for animals and my
decision to give up eating meat. I don’t expect people to
recognise how relevant these images are to my life, which
is why I chose to shoot them commercially, in a pop art style.
That acts as an entry point into the series and helps people
to simply appreciate them from a purely aesthetic point of view.
It was only after I finished shooting that I realised this was a
way of letting go of the past, which we all need to do at some
point if we don’t want it to hold us back.
