The series Going Bananas was shot at the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic when a majority of Asian countries were in Lockdown. I was on my way to exhibit at The Other Art fair in London 2020 when the event was forced to postpone due to the coronavirus. At that time of lockdown I was printing in Malaysia on my new work, my flight to London was cancelled, and South Korea closed its borders.
The place I was staying in Malaysia had a big tropical garden with loads of Banana trees, luckily enough they began to flower which gave me the the idea of the aptly named project “Going Bananas”.
By the time I was able to get a repatriation flight back to Seoul I had managed to photograph multiple rolls of film of various stages of decomposition of the flowers until there was nothing left but the dried shells of the flowers.
