I first started working on the series “Going Bananas” whilst I was staying at my studio In Malaysia. At the time I was printing my work for The Other Art Fair London 2020, this was when Covid-19 was just starting to pick up pace and countries around the world were introducing lockdowns.
A few days before my flight to London the show was cancelled, my flight to the UK was also cancelled, and then my return flight to Seoul where I lived was cancelled.
My printing for London was done, lockdown was introduced and for the next five months I was literally not going anywhere, living on delivery coffee, various menus and raiding the well stocked bar.
The studio, where I stayed had a large tropical garden with fruit trees such as star fruit, fig, mango and banana, which always seem to be in fruit.
During the time the banana trees began to fruit, which gave me the idea of the aptly named project “Going Bananas”. To document the banana flowers through various stages of life until decomposition, resembling my feeling during this time of isolation. When I finally managed to get a repatriation flight back to Seoul, five months had passed. During the five months I had managed to photograph the banana flowers using various film formats, shot in Black and White and colour, and able to incorporate them into three already ongoing projects.
